When I try to join a channel, I get the following message:

<ChanServ> Channel #TheChannel may not be registered or used.

And other variations on the theme.

This is not the same as when you have been banned from #TheChannel.

The Channel is Forbidden[edit]

  • You may not use ChannelNames that are the same as common network channels.
    • For example, you can not register channels such as #help, #chat, #mibbit and other related channels.
  • You may not use ChannelNames that are intended to mimic common network channels, even if the name of that channel isn't being used on this network.
  • You may not use ChannelNames that are intended to mimic network channels that are for help, staff, or other channels.
    • This includes cute spelling spoofs intended to trick users.
  • You may not use some ChannelNames clearly used to offend or generate turmoil.
  • You may not use some ChannelNames that are active spam-bot landing channels, used for command and control, or otherwise, even if the name of that channel isn't being used or targeted on this network.

Little possibility of appeal[edit]

The Mibbit Staff considers all conditions, and how it will impact users before forbidding a ChannelName.

  • If you have a valid reason why you think you should be able to use a forbidden ChannelName, you may take it up with the Mibbit Staff.
    • Note that unless you present a very clear and valid reason at the outset of your appeal, your request may not get you the expected results.
      • Asking us to let you use the channel #help might get you shot.
