/me
/me is used to 'emote' a line in a channel.
Typically when you type a statement, such as:
I went to the store.
Others would simply see the following:
<MyOwnNick> I went to the store.
When you use the /me statement, such as:
/me went to the store.
Others would simply see the following:
MyOwnNick went to the store.
It is a subtle difference, that makes more sense when you see it in a conversation. Typically a client will display the two types differently, including spacing, indentations and/or color changes.
