What does Nick Collision mean?

Once in a while, I see this:

*** Notice -- Received KILL message for Guest123456!Mibbit@mib-11DE075.dsl.lsan03.pacbell.net from webchat.mibbit.net Path: webchat!webchat.mibbit.net (Nick collision: irc.uk.mibbit.net <- services.mibbit.net)
*** Notice -- Received KILL message for Guest123456!Mibbit@287AB38E.50E33866.F91BE320.IP from webchat.mibbit.net Path: webchat!webchat.mibbit.net (Nick collision: irc.uk.mibbit.net <- services.mibbit.net)
*** Notice -- Received KILL message for eather!tasty@mib-CD7FA42C.dsl.klmzmi.sbcglobal.net from Joshua Path: irc!joshua.staff.mibbit.net!Joshua (No!)

And other variations on the theme.

This is an indication that a user's connection was forced (killed) from the irc.mibbit.net network.

Other networks and clients may have slightly different messages.

Is it important?

To the staff, yes. To general users, probably not.

When a NickServ registered nickname is used, and that account has '/ns set kill on', that nick MUST identify in a set period of time (60 seconds typically). If the nick is not identified in the time allotted, services forcibly changes the nickname to Guest12345 for example.

When Mibbit staff sees a spammer, channel flooder, or other such abusive clients that are causing harm to channels or the network, they may perform a kill.

Will you tell me why a Nick Collision just occurred?

Well, sure. It's really not a big deal, but is kind of perplexing about why you would care, and as explained above, it is really between the user and services.

Will you tell me why a Nick Kill just occurred?

Well, probably not. It's really not a big deal, but is kind of perplexing about why you would care, and as explained above, it is really between the spammer and Staff. Usually kills indicate we are up to our eyeballs in alligators, and too busy to answer such questions anyways.

Can I block it?

Sure, you had to turn it on, it is not default, you turn it off mode k (kill notices)

snomask k

User snomask +k means that you can see network forced disconnect messages called kill notices. These are messages that the system and/or staff (Opers) considers important.

  • To disable this notification, issue the command /mode YourNick +s -k.
